Block Loan Policy

School: Carlow Educate Together NS

Block Library Loans Policy

1. Introduction

Carlow Educate Together NS and Carlow Library Services have partnered up in a block loan scheme. This means that teachers can borrow books for their classroom library.

Not only does this provide the school with a huge variety of books and classroom resources, it also encourages children to use the library service outside of school and reduces the costs for the school with regards to reading materials.

With any partnership, it is important to have some guidelines to ensure that all parties are satisfied with the arrangement.

2. Teachers and Block Loans

All classroom teachers will be provided with a block loan scheme for their classroom. Members of support staff receive one block loan scheme between them.  Teachers in this scheme will have their name and phone number provided to the library for security purposes. While it is recommended that teachers take up this scheme, there is no enforcement on the teacher to do so.

The books borrowed from the library will be the responsibility of the class teacher and his/her pupils.  The teacher may use the books borrowed for any purpose in his/her classroom.  They may lend them out to children in the class to bring home, for example.

Children will be expected to sign up to the scheme and by doing so agree to the following:

Any damage or loss to books is also the responsibility of the users of the book, not just the teacher. If a child loses or damages (including drawing or writing on) a book borrowed from Carlow Library, the parents/guardians must cover the cost of replacing the book. It is therefore very important for the teacher to keep records of the books. Where no child is responsible for the loss or damage of a book, the cost will generally be taken from the classroom grant.

3. Ratification

The Board of Management received this policy in 2012 and it was ratified on 20th December 2012. It will be reviewed if deemed necessary by staff.
